Star Wars 1/12 Scale Tantive IV Custom Diorama Build Up Review

Like Gundam model kit makers, we Star Wars fan loves to customize. Especially when Hasbro does not offer what we want. So here is my custom 1/12 scale Tantive IV!

I’ve bought this kit from Jazzinc Dioramas but sadly, it needs quite a lot of fixing. The promotional image you see above is not what you will receive but no worry. We Star Wars fans can deal with this.

So one of the consoles is missing and not included but I didn’t want to wait 2 to 3 months for it to be shipped when I am working 7 days and the opportunity to make a diorama is now.

As you can see, the surface of the console, door, and well, everywhere is filled with pores. And it’s quite rough and visible. And sadly, the pore is going through the entire inside. So sanding does not help at all.

So I have 2 choices. One is to fill the surface with a putty or something and start sanding. This isn’t realistic since that can remove the detail and I honestly do not deserve all that work after paying $199 USD for a kit. It’s probably much cheaper and faster to build one or purchase a 3D printed item in such a case.

The logical answer was to use a heavy spray and to do several coating. Make the pores covered with the paint itself. This takes a lot of time but MONEY too since you need several cans of spray paints. But it also helps to blend the entire materials into the same color. As you can see, the console was yellow when it arrived.

I am not sure how many cans I spent. It was becoming a bad idea too but I had no other way to deal with this. A putty would be less costly but again, if you’re working 7 days and can do so much, a simple painting would save a lot of time. If does suffer your wallet instead though.

But with time and… well spray cans, now you can see the pore-infested pillar is smooth and beautiful!

The indented door area is also smooth too. I am quite happy with this since those pores were quite hideous. The panel lines of the control units on the door wall are rough but from a distance, you would never notice it.

Here everything after I’ve finished assembling the kit parts. As you can see, you will get a plastic blast door with a floor.

The printed backboard is to swap with the blast door if you wish. The print isn’t great as it’s very pixilated and burly. But you can always print whatever you like from your home printer and I am quite sure your home printer can do a better job.

I do love the rubber black tube that the kit came with. This stuff does decompose over time but I can deal with that when the time comes.

Honestly, I was a bit frustrated in need to deal with all this so after several spray coating, I blasted the console with paints and it now looks a bit blobby. But it’s ok. I am happy with the overall quality.

I am sure if you buy a 3D printed diorama or a kit, you will not get a ceiling for any of the Tantive IV dioramas. So I’ve made a cheap styrofoam box with a LED strip purchased on eBay. Lastly, if I cover it up with translucent plastic, it will be a great light-up box ceiling!

Oh, and not to forget to make a base since the Tantive IV walls are top-heavy due to their design. Again, a simple cheap styrofoam base will do the trick.

It doesn’t look beautiful from the outside but it’s the inside that counts. Literally.

After lighting up with my LED ceiling, what you all think? I think it’s exactly how you remember it from the film!

Very iconic! It was a different scene but you get the feeling.

A diorama is made to compliment the scene and the focal point (which are the figures). So some small incompletion won’t be much of a problem since your eyes will naturally look at the figures instead.

And, yes, this is exactly what I wanted to do! The most shocking cinematic scene I have experienced in my life! By the way, I am using a fog device behind the door. Please watch my video for the details.

Yup, and I must offer my 501st Stormtroopers into this shot too! God, I love them!

My princess, how about we simply copy this data and start shooting it in all directions? Vader is pissing his pants. Or you can give that droid a copy and give the original to Vader so that he will feel accomplished and not search further.

Screw it, we are the Redshirts of Star Wars. How did we get shot by the Stormtroopers!?

We need Antilles! So that I can let him get strangled by Vader! I need him now!!

So I am sure you want to get a 1/12 scale Tantive IV after my video/blog right? Not to worry, GTP Toys is offering a screen accurate 1/12 scale fully LED light-up diorama!! You heard me right. It lights up! And I mean everywhere!

The kit I got had an incaccurate consoles and those LED walls from GTP looks beautiful! So if you want to get your hands on one, here it is. And it’s only $199. Exactly the same price as the kit I bought. By the way, no this isn’t a paid promotion lol. It’s coming out this month (March) and for those who did early preorder, it was actually offered for only $150. Beautiful. I look forward in reviewing it soon.
By the way, GTP Toys has an official Star Wars license and will continue to release Star Wars 1/12 scale diorama for us Black Series fans.
