Mafex: Batman The Dark Knight Returns Figure Unboxing Photo Review

Who are they going to send after you?

The Dark Knight Returns is perhaps one of the most important comics in comic book history. And receiving a dedicated action figure alone is a joy but having it so accurately sculpted makes me feel happy that I was a collector.

Most people today think of Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy when hearing “The Dark Knight Returns” but This comic is what inspired many aspects of not only the Nolan trilogy but the Batman VS Superman from the DCEU. It is also one of the first comic books that made Batman more real. Meaning, a mortal man in the world surrounded by super-powered beings.

The box this legendary hero is in is actually a very plane. It even looks a bit cheap in a way due to the lack of color. The print kind of look faded and no, this isn’t a knock off. But would I care about the box? Not actually. What’s inside is what I am here for.

Look at that! The first Batman who has defeated Superman is here. Yes, it all happened here. When an old mortal man used his mind, strategy, and technology to take down a godly being. This is when Batman became a LEGEND in the superhero comic book fandom.

Batman comes with two head sculpts, five pairs of hands, and A LOT of Batarang. Total of eight pieces!!

And, YES! He can do his iconic pose. And I am sure Mafex was like “WE NEED TO NAIL THIS POSE OR ELSE THE FANS ARE GOING TO KILL US!” and yes, they have nailed it beautifully.

Batman: AND YOU ARE NOT TOO BRIGHT!

Batman: That was a nerve bundle in your deltoid. Might not hurt, but you won’t be moving that arm for a while.

Batman: You don’t get it, son. This isn’t a mudhole, it’s an operating table. And I am the surgeon.

And this Batman isn’t playing. Well, no Batman does but he wouldn’t care making you lose your eyesight.

If you lose a Batarang, do not worry. Because this figure comes with A LOT of Batarangs!

Unlike the Mafex HUSH Batman who got 4 wires in his cape, this one only comes with 2 but the cape is so dynamic that you won’t need more. The fabric they chose and the texture are fantastic!

Skeletor: I am the Alpha and the Omega!
Batman: AND I AM THE BATMAN!! (Skeletor gets beta)

Wilson Fisk: That is why I am the Kingpin!
Batman: AND I AM THE BATMAN!! (Fisk gets fisted)

Shredder: I’m the master… You’re the sla…
Batman: AND I AM THE BATMAN!! (Shredder becomes a bitch)

Kuja: I find this rain quite pleasant. It is as if the raindrops are bles…
Batman: AND I AM THE BATMAN!! (Kuja wasn’t blessed)

Destro: Premature panic is the sign of an immature mind!
Batman: AND I AM THE BATMAN!! (Destro panics)

Lord Zedd: I am Lord Zedd, emperor of all I seek! You have failed to…
Batman: AND I AM THE BATMAN!! (Zedd fails)

One this to take note of is that this Batman is huge! It will not match with any of the other Mafex scales. It probably fits better with the 7-inch line so it works better with Neca figures instead of Marvel Legends or any of the S.H.Figuarts or Mafex figures.

One thing I respect with Mafex is that their sculpting and proportion. It is spot on. And another thing I praise is that they do not simply do Batman and stop making other characters from that line. We are getting the Joker, a total of 3 different Batman, and even a Robin. And I am very sure we will be getting Superman and Armored Batman too.

This time around, the figure’s upper torso and arms joints are very good. But the knee and ankle are a bit soft. And because it is a top-heavy figure, you do need to care, or else he will fall quite easily.

If you had a bad day and need to express your anger with your toys, this figure is the right one. He’s the most ruthless Batman out there. He’s the “I will FXXX you UP!” Batman.

Man! This figure was such a blast! The sculpt, the detail, the proportion, and the articulation, it’s all amazing! Oh, and do not forget that awesome cape!!

LOOK AT THAT CAPE!!
The body is a very simple design yet because Mafex added not only the wrinkles but also a unique texture on the suit to add detail to make it not too plain at all.

I love Batman and this one is surely a version not for everyone but for a comic reader from the 80s, this is one of the most iconic Batman as well as a historically important one that I cannot ignore. I know the HUSH Batman is more popular because it’s the default design for modern Batman and it’s Jim Lee. Who will say NO to Jim? But for me, I prefer this classic version. That all said if they do offer us the further classic Norm Breyfogle version, that will be my go-to. And I know. It won’t happen.

Anyhow, this was another successful comic book hero figure from Mafex. And we are getting a lot of Batman from many other companies and Yes, I am going to review S.H.Figuarts 89 Keaton Batman. Actually, I already finished reviewing and just waiting for the launch day. Oh, and do not forget, we are also getting the same 89 Batman from Mezco this year and I am most excited about that one!
Thank you all for reading and see you all soon!
